Kolkata
Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is situated at the east bank of the river Bhagirathi, a major tributary of river Ganges. It is the capital of the state of West Bengal. The city is also called as the city of slums, city of political processions or city or city of palaces, but to the Bengali community people, it is the ‘city of joy’.
During the British period, it was the capital of India. To find at the history we have to go back to 1690 A.D. when an Englishman ‘Job Charnock’ was given the lease of three villages – Sutanuti, Govindapur & Kolkata for East India Company and then renamed the three places as Calcutta of today's Kolkata.
This is the largest in India and the sixth largest city in this world. This city is very much cosmopolitan in nature. People from different places and from different ethnic groups are enjoys the magical charm of this city. Dominique Lapierre wrote about Kolkata in his novel, the City Of Joy.

- By Air – Kolkata has an international airport named as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. This airport serves as domestic as well as international purposes also. The airport has direct connectivity to and from Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati, Chennai, Bangalore, Agartala, Paro, Dhaka, Bangkok, Singapore, London, Frankfurt, Dubai, Moscow etc.
- By Rail – Kolkata is one of the most important stations of the Eastern and South Eastern Railway (Indian Railway) and has regular railway connectivity to and form New Jalpaiguri (NJP), Delhi, Jammu, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Guwahati etc.
- By Road – Kolkata has good bus connectivity within the state, with the other neighboring states and with Bangladesh. Long distance buses are available throughout the day and night service is also available for Siliguri, Patna, Ranchi, Rajgir, Puri, Phuentsholing (Bhutan) etc. The bus for Dhaka (Bangladesh) is available from the Karunamoyee International Bus Stand in Salt Lake. All other bus service is generally available from Esplanade.
