Situated in the confluence of confluence of Bhagirathi and Jalangi river is well known for its cultural and religious importance. Nabadwip practically means 9 islands. They are namely Simantadwip, Rudradwip, Madhyadwip, Godrumdwip, Ritudwip, Jahnudwip, Modadrumdwip, Koladwip, and Antardwip (Mayapur). The place is the birth place of great Vaishnava Saint Shri Chaitanya deva who took his birth in 1486. Nabadweep is situated at the confluence of river Bhagirathi and Jalangi. In the era of Sen Dynasty this place served as the capital of Bengal. 186 temples are there in Nabadeep as per government records. It is the world headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) at Mayapur.
Another attraction of Nabadweep is Raash Festival. It is also known as "Pat Purnima" or "Rash Kali Puja" or "Shakta Rash" as "Gour Ganger Desh" by various sects of religion. It is a place for pilgrimage also and is a great crowd puller.
