Lachung

Lachung is a small bhutia village in North Sikkim. The place is developed as a new tourist destination in Sikkim. Lachung is a divine abode situated in the northern district of Sikkim. Perched at an elevation of 8,800 feet, Lachung is an ideal place to spent beautiful moments in solitude. The way to Lachung passes through quaint villages, scenic spots, and waterfalls. In recent times, Lachung has been made available to the tourists in an organized manner. It would not be embroidered to say that Lachung is actually a Shangri-La on the earth.

Lachung is one amongst the most beautiful villages that is adorned with the vista of snow capped mountains, astounding waterfalls and dazzling streams lined with the Rhododendron Forest. Incredible splendor in winters. It is generally draped by a thick layer of snow and is a small settlement for Lepcha and a group of Indian army.  Yumthang Valley is situated just at a distance of 25 kilometers an ideal place for angling trout, home of Shingbha Rhododendron Sanctuary with 24 species of Rhododendron and hot water spring. Lachung Monastery and the local villages are worth visiting. The village is unique in culture & tradition. Katao and Yumesamdong are rare experience one can have. There is a small Monastery in Lachung which is the centre of all religious function of locals. The valley is the home of Shingbha Rhododendron Sanctuary with 24 species of Rhododendron. A must see here are the hot springs.

To Reach

  • By Air – Lachen is 118 kilometers from Gangtok. The closest air port is at Bagdogra, which is 125 kilometers from Gangtok and connected with all important Indian metros with regular flights from Kolkata, Guwahati, Delhi, etc. Helicopter / Chopper services to Gangtok from Siliguri and back are in regular service. Mountain flights and other such tours to North Sikkim are also conducted.
  • By Rail – Lachung is 118 kilometers from Gangtok. The nearest railhead is at New Jalpaiguri which is 130 kilometers from Gangtok. NJP is well connected with all major cities in India. At Gangtok, railway bookings can be made at the booking counter of the Sikkim Nationalized Transport Terminus.
  • By Road – Lachung is 118 kilometers from Gangtok. Lachung to Chungthang is 23 kilometers and Chungthang is another 95 kilometers from Gangtok. Gangtok is connected with Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri by the national highway 31A. Gangtok is at a distance of 120 kilometers from Siliguri and will take 4 hours from Siliguri to reach Gangtok. Gangtok is connected by road with Darjeeling 95 kilometers, 4 hours drive, Kalimpong 75 kilometers, 3hours drive.
