Shivasagar

Sibsagar was the ancient capital of Assam for 600years. Sibsagar, 55 kms away from Jorhat is an important city from the historical viewpoint. Shisagar means the ocean of Lord Shiva. Shivsagar is a town in the Shivsagar District of Assam in India and it is situated at a distance of 360kms from the capital city Guwahati of Assam.

Shibsagar is famous for Ahom palaces and monuments in and around Shibsagar. Modern day Shibsagar is a well diversified city with main business of oil and tea trading.

Built around the Sibsagar Tank, the town was once the seat of Ahom Kings who ruled Assam from 1699 to 1788. Sibsagar is 88 kms from Dibrugarh by road.The main feature of the Shibsagar is the water body from where it has derived its name. The 257 acre lake is also called Borpukhuri. There are three temples on it’s banks. The most prominent one is Sivadoul. The other temples are the Vishnudoul and Devidoul.
