Yuksom

At a height of 12000 feet Yuksom was the first capital of Sikkim. It serves as the base camp for unforgettable treks into the wilds of the mountains. This high altitude alpine trek passes through exquisite landscapes, dense Rhododendron forest.  Dzongri or to Goechala at a height of 18,000 feet is a moderate trek and is mesmerizing. The trek has magnificent views of Mount Pandim, awe inspiring Mount Khangchendzonga and the whole of Himalayan range. Khangchendzonga National Park is accessible from Yuksom. It is a paradise for nature lover and the attraction for wild - life animals and birds are irresistible. Yuksom literally means the meeting place of the three wise / superior ones. A historical hamlet in the west Sikkim was in limelight in the 16th Century A.D. Three great saints helped in coronation of the first “Chogyal or king" Phuntsok Namgyal. The site is marked by the original throne and a footprint on a rock face near the throne, presumably left by Gyalwa Lhatsun Chenpo. Yuksom offers adventure, trekking, leisure or cultural tour.  The rich cultural heritage of Sikkim started from here. The misty, verdant forest and slopes of Yuksom beckons to explore their depths and discover many legends untold. It can also boast of having the oldest monastery, built in 1701 A.D. The surroundings are enthralling with little blooms, and smoky mist swirling among the branches, it is an experience that will enthrall all.
