Jatinga , a village on a ridge, is located in Dima Hasao district (DHD), Assam State in India. It is 330 km south of Guwahati. It is most famous for the phenomenon of birds “committing suicide”. Although the birds do not commit suicide and are actually killed, the phenomenon of suicide has spread far and wide among common people.
Jatinga, the peak of Haflong Hill is full of blue vandas, a lovely sky blue orchid, only of its kind in the world. The bird mystery of Jatinga is a fascinating annual feature (Sep - Oct). Come September and you will see thousand of birds fly and flutter at Jatinga for the last time. From the elevated watch tower you observe these feathery creatures yield to their death wish and then they downy plumages dropping down in a heap.
Jatinga is situated at a distance of 9 km from Haflong town. While buses to Silchar pass through, it may be easier to visit Jatinga on a day-trip from Haflong by auto –rickshaw.
