Situated at a distance of 37 kilometers from Kolkata, this town is famous for its French structures. Chandannagar, formerly a small city and former French colony located 30 kilometers and was known as 'Farasdanga'. It is situated along the banks of river Hooghly. This city has been able to maintain a separate identity different from all other cities and abide by her own characteristics. Chandannagar is connected to Kolkata by railway, roadways and river and it takes about an hour to reach there by car from Kolkata.
Today the main attraction of Chandannagar is ‘Jagadhattri Puja’. It falls one month after famous ‘Durga Puja’ of Bengal. There are almost 80 – 90 Jagadhattri Pujas held in Chandannagar. Chandannagar is famous for cottage industries and lighting arrangement for all puja pandal decorations. The big budget pujas are performed by – Shitaltala, Barabazar, Baghbazar, Palpara, Santan Sangha etc.
